The Bandura
If there is any instrument in Ukrainian music that deserves the title of a 'national' instrument, it is a bandura.
The origins of the multi-stringed bandura can be traced back to the seventh century. However, it was not until the Ukrainian Kozak era (from the sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth century), that it underwent certain structural changes which produced the instrument that we know today.
The immense popularity of the bandura during the Kozak era can be attributed to its adoption, as an instrument of accompaniment, by the Kobzars, or 'balladeers', who traversed the Ukrainian countryside singing epic ballads (Dumy) about the exploits of the Kozaks.
Although the Kobzars all but disappeared with the end of the Kozak era, their legacy remained. Throughout the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the art of bandura playing was carried on for the most part, by blind minstrels, who like the Kobzars before them, wandered about the Ukraine, playing their banduras and singing for anyone who would listen to them.
Due to its 'renaissance' at the turn of the century, the bandura today has become an integral part of Ukrainian social and cultural life and is rapidly becoming known and admired by the public at large.
The music of the bandura combines the sound of the harp and harpsicord, at once clear and resonant... rich and mellow. The combination of the bass and treble strings (up to 68 strings, in all) give the instrument vast melodic possibilities... with the treble strings playing the melody (or, variations of it) and the bass strings adding the accompaniment. The strings are struck by the ends of the fingers, as well as by the nails. The result is enchanting. Sit back and enjoy the beauty of this unique instrument.

Victor Mishalow
Victor Mishalow was born in Sidney, Australia in 1960 and began studying the bandura when he was eleven years old. In 1974, he became a pupil of Hryhory Bashul, a former student of Hnat Hotkevych, one of the foremost figures in the modern revival of interest in the bandura. In 1978, Mishalow received a research grant from the
Australian Arts Council. The grant enabled him to travel to North America, where, he pursued his studies of bandura technique with Petro Kytasty and Petro Honcharenko of the Shevchenko Bandurist Chorus of Detroit.
From 1979 to 1981, Mishalow was at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Kiev, Ukraine. Here, he worked with the bandura virtuoso, Serhij Bashtan. While in Kiev, he also spent considerable time in private study with Hryhory Kyrylovych Tkachenko.... thought to be the last true living Kobzar in the Ukraine.
Despite his age, Mishalow is an accomplished bandura player. He has performed throughout Europe, Australia and North America. He is also a teacher and a scholar ans has written numerous articles on the bandura for various magazines, newspapers and periodicals.
In this, his first recording, Mishalow demonstrates not only his own
immense talent, but also the scope and beauty of this instrument.
